MCD is responsible for greening of the area of Delhi under, its jurisdiction. There are about 15,000 parks, gardens, playgrounds, tot lots, traffic circles and strategic green areas in Delhi. The work is going apace according to a comprehensive timebound Action Plan

MCD is managing the development of gardens, parks, open spaces, playgrounds, stadia, traffic circles, central verges, roadside plantation etc. in area of nearly 1400sq. Km. under MCD's jurisdiction. These activities have increased manifold during the last few years. There were 2,122 parks/gardens with 833 ornamental and 1239 ordinary parks/ green areas in 1985-86. Due to development of new colonies and transfer of horticulture services in villages and newly developed colonies by DDA, the total number of parks rose to 4811 in 1990. The number of parks/green areas with the addition of horticulture services became 12035 in 1996 with 1700 ornamental parks and 10335 ordinary and green areas.

At present the total number of parks/green areas is more than 15000 covering about 5500 acres of land. Out of these, there are 5500 ornamental parks, 9400 ordinary parks and 82 children parks. This way the overall work of the Department has increased three times and number of upgraded ornamental parks nearly about five times.

The Horticulture Department is also managing and improving horticulture services in the city, old city, trans-Yamuna area, rural area. It is also maintaining gardens like Roshanara Garden, Qudsia Garden, Maharaja Agrasei Park, Netaji Subhash Park, Queen's Garden, Ajmal Khan Park, Regional Park Punjabi Bagh. Besides this, the important grounds like Ramlila Ground, Gandhi Ground, Parade Ground, Kotla Ground are being developed as green lungs. The Ambedkar Stadium which is put to maximum use for football and other activities in Delhi is also maintained keeping in view its mass use. The Department is also maintaining parks/green areas attached to various municipal buildings, institutions, offices, hospitals, community halls, schools etc.

The organisation made an attempt to establish the first Herbal Garden at Punjabi Bagh, Ring Road. Already 125 specified of medicinal, aromatic value trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses have been incorporated. This is the first attempt of its kind.
